چکیده

− The present contribution is focused on the measurement of the degradation induced in the case of two splitters and two attenuators used in optical fiber communication systems, under gamma and neutron irradiation. The measurements were carried out at specific wavelengths (λ = 1310 nm and λ = 1550 nm) or over a spectral band (λ = 1510 – 1620 nm), in order to evaluate the wavelength dependence of the phenomena. These components were also tested as it concerns the changes of the polarization state of optical radiation they guide. A second investigation was performed on the degradation of the operational parameters for a laser diode driving circuit and a Peltier TEC (thermoelectric cooler), under gammaray, neutron and electron beam irradiation. No significant changes were noticed in the spectral transmission of the two passive components, but the degradation of the light polarization parameters was a significant one under gammaray irradiation. In the case of the laser diode drivers a drop of 80 % of the laser diode optical power and the embedded photodiode responsivity was observed under gamma-ray and neutron irradiation.

Investigation of the Effect of Electron Beam Different Doses on Optical Dissipation in Fiber Optic

Measurement of ionizing radiation in various fields, such as environmental safety, industrial detection processes, radiation protection and medical is very important. Radiation dosimetry plays an important role in determining the amount of energy absorbed and the effects of radiation. Recent optical fiber sensors have been shown to be radiation dosimeters. Our goal here is to investigate the ef...

Calibration and optimization of a low cost diffusion chamber for passive separated measurements of radon and thoron in soil by Lexan PC SSNTD

Background: Separate radon and thoron measurements in soil are very important in assessment of internal exposure due to inhalation of such radioactive gases. Materials and Methods: In this study, a low cost, small size, passive diffusion chamber has been developed for simple measurement of Radon-222 and Radon-220(Thoron) gases separately in soil. The diffusion chamber consists of two films and ...

Monte-Carlo Calculation of Radon Absorbed Dose in Optical Fiber as a Novel Method in Dosimetry and Radon Measurement

Introduction Radon is a colorless and tasteless gas which exists in most soils. It is a substance that poses a potential risk for lung cancer in case a person is exposed to high levels over long periods of time. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 90% of lung cancers per year are caused by radon. The aim of this paper is to estimate the absorbed doses of 222Rn by MCNPX simu...

Gamma Radiation Effects in Yb-Doped Optical Fiber

Determination of the radiation response of doped-fiber laser materials, systems and components to relevant ionizing radiation fluxes is central to the prediction of long-term fiber-based laser performance/survivability in adverse and/or space-based environments. It is well known that optical elements that are placed into orbit around the Earth experience harsh radiation environments that origin...

Toward the Development of Radiation-Tolerant Instrumentation Data Links for Thermonuclear Fusion Experiments

Thermonuclear reactors will require permanent monitoring under high-gamma dose rates and high neutron flux. We propose to get rid of the digital data transmission limitations in highly radioactive environments by implementing an analog fiber-optic link based on directly modulated vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSELs). In this paper, we introduce an architecture for highly radiation-to...
